Regulations for the carving spaces

Introduction

The purpose of SA Steinskulptur is to give Norwegian sculptors access to carry out their work in stone on the premises of the undertaking, cf. the statutes.

The workshop is open all year. There are currently six carving spaces: two for larger works, three for smaller works, and five for smaller work over short periods. Each carving space comes with access to electricity and compressed air, as well as air hoses, a work bench and a lockable cabinet. SA Steinskulptur has some tools available, but as a rule you use your own. Introductory courses in stone carving and the use of various tools are held as needed.

SA Steinskulptur offers favourable rental rates to all professional visual artists. Members of SA Steinskulptur and members of the Norwegian Association of Sculptors receive a discount. The rates are listed under Prices and in the application form.

Art students are given access to the carving spaces under a separate agreement between the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, or an equivalent art academy, and SA Steinskulptur.

Breaches of the regulations are addressed and sanctioned. In the most serious cases, the right to work on the premises may be withdrawn.

Allocation of a carving space

Allocation follows a written, digital application. The criteria are that members of SA Steinskulptur and the Norwegian Association of Sculptors are given priority, that the carving spaces should benefit as many as possible, and that projects for exhibitions or commissioned works with firm deadlines may be prioritised.

The start and end dates of the desired carving period are stated in the application. The maximum allocation period is one year. An extension requires a new application. The application is then weighed against other applicants, and an applicant seeking an extension has no right of precedence.

Before work begins

Everyone allocated a carving space must confirm in writing that they accept the allocation, and thereby undertake to follow the regulations in force.

All work activity on the premises must be agreed with the managing director in advance. The same applies to placing sculpture, materials and equipment on site.

Any need for training in the use of tools and equipment must be clarified in advance.

Responsibility, health, environment and safety

Users of the carving spaces work at their own responsibility and risk, and must hold valid personal accident insurance before work begins. Steinskulptur covers accident insurance for up to five students at any one time. Liability insurance is covered by SA Steinskulptur for everyone using the carving spaces.

Only tools in good condition may be used, and safe use is a requirement. If the necessary competence is lacking, the user is obliged to take a course and receive guidance. Protective equipment is mandatory: eye, hearing and respiratory protection, safety footwear, protective gloves and any other equipment the work requires. SA Steinskulptur reserves the right to inspect tools and tool handling. Reckless or unsafe use may lead to exclusion from the premises.

Work at a carving space shall be carried out with consideration for other users and adjoining carving spaces.

Everyone working on the premises is responsible for knowing the emergency numbers and the location of first aid equipment, which shall be clearly visible and accessible. In the event of an accident it must be possible to call for help. There shall therefore always be at least two people present in the work area, and each individual is responsible for never working alone.

Order

The work area shall be used within the boundaries of the allocated carving space and within the allocated period.

The user is responsible for keeping their space tidy and free of nuisance to adjoining carving spaces. Tools, stone and other materials shall be kept within the user’s own carving space or in the accompanying cabinet. Each working day ends with clearing up. SA Steinskulptur has a container for discarded stone. All other waste that cannot be placed in the bins or container provided must be removed from the premises by the user.

If a carving space stands unused for more than two weeks without contact with the managing director, the right to the space for the agreed period is forfeited.

If the agreed start date cannot be met, it may be postponed. The condition is that the delay is reported to the managing director at least one week in advance.

It is not permitted to leave several unfinished projects on the premises outside the allocated carving space.

On completion of a project and at the end of the carving period, works and materials shall be removed without delay. The carving space is cleared and the cabinet emptied, so that everything is ready for the next user. In the event of unforeseen difficulties, delayed collection must be agreed separately.

Subject to capacity, SA Steinskulptur offers short-term storage in connection with the allocation of a carving space. Any such need should be reported to the managing director in good time.

All materials shall be marked so that the owner can be identified. If works or materials are left uncollected beyond the agreed time, the owner is notified. If they are still not removed after two written notices, Steinskulptur will have to remove them itself, at the owner’s expense.

Working hours and noise limits

The carving spaces shall mainly be used Monday to Friday between 07:00 and 17:00.

Exceptions may be made where there is a particular need, but must be agreed separately. Work at weekends and on public holidays may only take place between 09:00 and 16:00, and on condition that there are always at least two people on the premises.

No noisy work may be carried out at weekends or on public holidays, or after 17:00 on weekdays.

Tools

SA Steinskulptur has tools available on loan for course participants and short-term use, for a maximum of four weeks. A deposit of NOK 1,000 is payable for the loan of a complete beginner’s set. If tools are needed beyond four weeks, you must acquire your own. SA Steinskulptur can advise and assist with purchases. All borrowing of tools is arranged by agreement with the workshop manager on the premises of SA Steinskulptur.
